Mental Boot Camp

Just a little over a year ago, some trusted associates and I took part in a three hour battle that we would not soon forget. My fellow soldiers in my platoon sat among my side as we took direct and indirect fire from all sides. Artillery shells filled with geographical, historical and social inquiries exploded all around. Automatic rifles fired off clips of songs and pictures of random celebrities causing casualties among the toughest of soldiers. The battle raged and no end seemed to be in sight. However, my brothers and sisters and I trudged on; fighting each question that was thrown in our direction. After what seemed to be a lifetime's worth of chaos, the enemy fire ceased. To the left and the right were bodies that had exhibited all of their mental fortitude only to succomb to defeat at the end; casualties in a battle of intelligence. The soldiers on my team then realized that not only did we survive the battle, we had come out as champions. Our first pub quiz victory was a moment of glory and we lived as kings among men for those late hours on a Monday evening.

Riding the coattails of this victory was glorious but it did not last long. The next week we showed back up ready to fight whatever was thrown at us and were quickly decimated. Our wits had failed us. Week after week the same thing happened as our short reign as champions faded further away into the past. It didn't take long for my team and I to realize that art of winning a pub quiz was not in our cards. I accepted this as my fate until I discovered Good Job, Brain!

The weekly podcast, GJB!, forced the knowledge I retained to be pushed to the limits I did not know was possible. When I thought all was lost, they picked me up by focusing on certain topics during each episode. Hosts Karen, Colin, Dana and Chris use their expertise and all around awesomeness to kick my brain into shape and arm it with a stockpile of ammunition. As veteran pub quiz champs, they know the importance of learning survival techniques in the world of mental battles and they teach this by setting up quizzes amongst themselves during the show. The quizzes soon turn into fascinating discussions about anything from geographic areas (Disneyworld is larger than San Francisco), different types of transportation (bicycles were one of the biggest factors in advancing women's rights) or non-alcoholic beverages (Nequick's mascot is a bunny because chocolate was originally wrapped in rabbit skin).

It won't be long until I once again find myself in the trenches at the local pub. Until that time comes, I will continue to train with GJB! until my brain makes Rambo look like Elmer Fudd.

Exercise your gray matter.

Without education we cannot survive in this world. Education helps us to understand that how to see this world. We have to know about our history to survive in this world. Education helps us to understand that why, what, when, where and how these things are going to be done.
